I have loved traveling since I was a little kid. I have a distinct recollection of one of the first international trips my parents took me on. It was to London and then, South Africa. It all felt so foreign and new; I had never felt so much excitement and anticipation.
I am now a mom of 5 adventurous and wild boys and am married to my high school sweetheart who is half-American, half-French. Although we value our kids’ education, we both agree that the experiences we give them traveling all over the world is probably the most educational thing we can provide them.
One of my youngest sons is on the spectrum. This has provided our family with entirely different travel planning needs and is something I truly feel I have developed an expertise on how to manage and ensure the best possible outcome for the child and their family.
Our family often summers for part of the summer in France to be near my husband and his family as well as to immerse our children in the culture. We spend the other part of our summer out in Montana because we love the weather, the atmosphere and the activities for our boys. I have gained considerable knowledge on how best to choose a place to vacation for extended periods of time in Europe as well as out west.
Although I love trips with my large family (grandparents included at times), I also love a girls’ trip or a a couples’ trip. Whether it be somewhere in the Caribbean, farther internationally or in the U.S, these are also trips I love to plan.
I have been fortunate to have traveled to so many places. One of my favorite trips was a trip to Rwanda a few years ago for my husband and my 15th wedding anniversary. We went there with the primary goal of doing the gorilla treks and decided to do 2 of them so that we could fully appreciate the experience. While doing the gorilla treks, we also fell in love with the country itself. The people were so welcoming and happy to have us there. Their pride in their country and their jobs was so special. We can not wait to go back one day with our kids.
Another outstanding trip I have been on was a catamaran trip in the Amalfi coast, Italy, with my family and some friends. The catamaran was the perfect size for getting around the area and it enabled us to really enjoy the Amalfi coast in all its beauty without dealing with the crowds. We were able to do all kinds of outdoorsy, ocean-oriented activities in a beautiful spot while also experiencing the amazing culture of the Amalfi coast. We had a chef, a couple of stewards and a captain. By the end of the 6-day trip we felt they were part of our family. We can not wait to charter the same catamaran in the future in the Aeolian Isles.
My kids are sports fanatics for basically every sport, but most especially for soccer (European football) and American football. Their passion for soccer comes from their half-French father, of course. Our family “team” is Liverpool F.C. Their rival team is Manchester City, F.C. A couple years ago we went to a game between the two of the,. From the gourmet meal we had at the stadium before the game to the experience of watching these two teams compete, it was one of the most memorable trips we have ever experienced as a family.
A couple of years ago as part of one of my family’s Africa trips, I took my older 2 sons who were 11 and 9 at the time, great white shark cage diving in Capetown. From the helicopter trip to the actual spot, which was absolutely breathtaking itself, to the experience of diving with great whites while being educated about them by a marine biologist, it was an amazing experience we will never forget!
