Western Europe esp. France, Switzerland, northern Spain (Catalunya, Costa Verde), northern Italy & U.K. (esp. Yorkshire & Derbyshire); Western Canada esp. BC & Alberta.
Biking/cycling trips, hiking, wine & dining, rural / “off the beaten path”.
Backroads, Butterfield & Robinson, Duvine and Châteaux et Hotels
I can’t give you just one!!! I would pick the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Canada, the AC Hotel Palau de Bellavista in Girona (Catalunya), and two small hotels in the Haute-Loire (Auvergne) in la France profonde – Le Clair Matin in Le-Chambon-sur-Lignon and Le Haut-Allier in Le-Pont-d’Alleyras, the latter with a Michelin-starred restaurant (in the middle of nowhere!). Also Design Hotel Tyrol in Rabla, near Merano (Alto Adige/Sudtirol).
This is also difficult. I will choose one of our trips to France but it could easily be an amalgam of several (including Italy, Spain & Switzerland). In 2010 we spent 4 weeks in August in the southern half of France. Highlights of this trip included attending the wedding of friends who live near Avignon with three days of celebration; cycling with my friend André (then turning 73) on both my absolute favorite ride – up to Col du Lauteret and continuing on up to Col de Galibier at 8,681 feet – and my most grueling ride ever – up Mont Ventoux from Malaucène, a climb of over a mile vertically; hiking & dining with friends; and spending a week in a rented country house in the Dordogne.
